Volunteer Spotlight: Rick Fraser

Intern: Rick Fraser

Rick is majoring in Child, Youth and Family Studies at Portland State University and is completing his internship with SOOR!  Rick coached Fitness as a sport   for Winter Virtual Games, will coach again in the Summer Season and planned a Nutrition and Culinary Skills series for SOOR Active. The Nutrition class kicked off last week and athletes are excited to take part and learn new things each week.

Rick was a little nervous when he first started coaching, but then realized how much he liked working with the athletes, teaching them skills and seeing their success.  His 10-year-old daughter, Aydenn, likes to watch the training sessions and Rick says that she has learned a lot about inclusion which has had a very positive impact on her life.

This internship with SOOR has had a huge impact on Rick’s life as it made him realize that he wants to be a Special Education Teacher.  Rick said, “Coaching and interacting with our athletes was the turning point to realize that I enjoy teaching and like it better than social work.”  Rick has now applied to the Masters in Education program at PSU.

Thank you, Rick, for setting a great precedent.  Because you did such an amazing job this season, you have laid the groundwork for us to be excited about having a student from your university program intern with us each semester/season.
