UCS Virtual Youth Summit Highlight
Over 200 students and educators from 30 elementary, middle and high schools in Oregon attended the 2021 Virtual Youth Leadership Summit on Saturday, April 17th to celebrate inclusion. The theme of the Youth Summit was Connection and focused on the critical need for all students to feel seen, heard and valued in their schools and communities. Celebration was also a key theme to honor the tremendous strength, perseverance, and courage that students and educators demonstrated throughout the past year of distance learning. Finding creative ways to stay Unified and connected virtually was no small task!
Unified student leaders Abby and Elijah from Forest Grove High School emceed the 3-hour event which included guest speaker Tahja Ilerant from Special Olympics Florida, interactive breakout sessions led by students and educators, an athlete panel featuring SOOR athletes and partners, as well as student athletes from the University of Portland. The event ended in true SOOR fashion with a dance party hosted by SOOR athlete, SOOR Board member, and Athlete Input Council Chair, Shawn Hinz.
The highlight for many attendees was guest speaker Tajha Illerant who shared her powerful life story and how it’s empowered her to become a public speaker and inspire others to be change-makers in their schools and communities.
All attendees received a Unified backpack full of fitness and mindfulness resources, SOOR swag, and fun goodies to celebrate.
Thank you to everyone who attended, presented, shared their stories, and contributed to such an incredible virtual event!
