Samantha and Vickie Lee
Introducing Samantha and Vickie Lee from Washington County!
Samantha Lee is a veteran athlete of over 30 years with Special Olympics Oregon. Samantha has been an active participant and has tried many sports until she found her special niche in bocce ball. Samantha has been competing in bocce ball for over 10 years and doesn’t plan to retire any time soon! She feels good and confident when competing and it makes her feel like she can do anything.
Since she is shorter, Sam finds that bocce ball fits her style and that she enjoys so much. Trying to do well in a Special Olympics Oregon competition makes her proud.
Outside of Special Olympics, Sam is an avid fan of Oregon State University sports. She loves spending time with her family and friends, cheering on the OSU Beavers. Sam is an honorary cheerleader at her high school and has volunteered at an assisted living center for three years, helping with art projects and music time.
Sam loves hanging out with her family. She is an admirer of her sister Shannon, who is always nice to everyone. Shannon spends time with Sam and her friends. And Sam will be participating in USA Games with her mother, Vickie Lee, who will be playing as a Unified Partner.
In preparation for USA Games, Sam is lifting weight, jogging, and eating right. She is so excited to be chosen and is looking forward to making friends and meeting new people, representing all her fellow Special Olympics athletes, from Oregon and beyond!
Vickie Lee is a Unified Partner for Special Olympics Oregon, with over 15 years of experience playing in and coaching several sports, mainly bocce ball, working with her daughter Samantha. She has also judged competition in the sport for about 4 years.
Vickie’s life has been forever changed by watching her daughter become more and more confident as she competes. It has taught her the value of this program, watching other lives change and witnessing the effect it has on parents of those with intellectual disabilities.
Vickie’s own life has not been without its challenges. She is a breast cancer survivor of 15 years. She is involved in her community by volunteering at an assisted living center, working with Special Olympics, and watching her daughters become close while supporting and being there for each other – all this has made her proud.
Vickie admires her husband Rick, who has also coached and mentored her daughter Sam. She herself was a bocce ball Unified Partner at the 2018 USA Games. It was an awesome experience.
Vickie is serious about getting ready for the 2022 USA Games. She is running 1-1/2 miles per day and doing her cardio workout in preparation. She is looking forward to competing with her daughter this year and meeting people from all over America, making memories that will last a lifetime.
