Athlete Spotlight, Kevin + Robin Buster

Plunging in icy water at the Willamette Boat Landing at Crystal Lake Sports Fields in Corvallis this weekend will be siblings Robin and Kevin Buster.

Polar plunging is a family affair for the Busters, with mom Fran, brother John and sister Anna all jumping in together to fundraise for Special Olympics Oregon, helping to provide access to sport competitions, activities, and community for over 5,000 SOOR athletes.

Asked how excited Kevin is to plunge this year, he said, “I love to jump in the water! And I love to help out and raise funds.” He also enjoys dressing in costume, which a majority of plungers do on an annual basis, and his favorite costume to date is a superhero.

The Busters will be plunging this year with Mandy Dyer, Special Olympics Oregon bocce head coach for Team Oregon in Benton County. Mandy is a key volunteer for Special Olympics Oregon and has been head coach, assistant coach, and a Unified partner for bocce ball as well as for swimming.

The crew will be jumping in this year wearing Beaver Sports gear. Robin is equally looking forward to Saturday along with brother Kevin. Said Robin, “I’m really excited for Polar Plunge! It’s fun to be part of a team, and I like to get wet!”

The Busters enjoy being athletes for many sports at Special Olympics Oregon, and Robin and sister Anna were Unified partners in bocce for many years. Said Fran “if there is a sport going on, they’ll (want to) be involved!”

Kevin and Robin are also active outside of competitions for SOOR, participating in local plays and theater groups. Said Fran, “they are both very good at learning their lines, and Kevin is great at adlibbing in the right spots.”

Join Kevin, Robin and many others and participate in the Corvallis Polar Plunge this weekend, raising necessary funds for Special Olympics Oregon sport programming!
