"The Drive to Corvallis"

The 2017 Summer State Games are coming to Corvallis!

Celebrating the new partnership between Special Olympics Oregon and Oregon State University, OSU President Ed Ray and Corvallis Mayor Biff Traber welcomed Special Olympics Oregon and the 2017 Summer State Games to the OSU campus during a kickoff event March 8, 2017.

President Ray and Special Olympics Oregon CEO Margie Hunt even revealed for the first time the Games' brand new logo.

In the largest annual event for Special Olympics Oregon, the Summer State Games hosts 2,000 athletes, 600 coaches and 1,300 volunteers over the course of two days. The move to Corvallis and the campus of Oregon State University this year will create a truly unique village-like experience for athletes from the 30 local programs around the state that will travel for the athletic competition.

“This partnership with OSU is absolutely one-of-a-kind for our athletes,” said Mark Hanken, Senior Vice President of Sports for Special Olympics Oregon. “The opportunity to compete in collegiate venues and experience a true Olympic village-type setting on the OSU campus will create an unforgettable and exciting atmosphere for our athletes and families.”

“I am very excited that Oregon State University is collaborating with Special Olympics Oregon and will be hosting the Summer State Games this July,” said OSU President Ed Ray. “I look forward to cheering on all the Special Olympics athletes and ensuring that they have a wonderful experience here at OSU.”

The Summer State Games features a weekend packed with activities for both Special Olympics Oregon participants and the community. With more than 3,000 people traveling to Corvallis, the Games are expected to provide a significant economic boost to the community during the summer. Participants and coaches will use more than 2,000 rooms on campus at Oregon State University, while hundreds of additional local hotel rooms are expected to be booked by family and volunteers.

Events and experiences include:
• Olympic Town - a community focused festival-style experience will welcome athletes and guests on Parker Plaza directly outside of Reser Stadium
• Over 1,000 on-site health screenings & Oregon Team Wellness activities will be available free-of-charge for athletes throughout the weekend
• The entertaining and exciting Games Ceremonies and parade of athletes will be held at Reser Stadium
• Also, arriving on campus for the Games Ceremonies is the Flame of Hope carried by a SOOR athlete alongside a select Law Enforcement Torch Run officer to light the cauldron. The Flame of Hope travels 800 miles across Oregon each year, with more than 200 law enforcement officials participating in the journey
• Golf Tournament – SOOR will host a community golf tournament at Trysting Tree Golf Club on July 7 to kick-off a weekend of activities

The 2017 Summer State Games are made possible by A-dec, Reser, Starker Forest, Nike, Les Schwab, Toyota, Samaritan Health, Enterprise and Oregon State University.
